Tasteevere restaurant in trastevere

Foodporn top 3 – our subjective secret for you

Rome is full of restaurants, ice cream bars and cafés. To choose the top of the tops is a real challenge. We have always tried to find the stunning balance of reasonable price, cheerful and helpful service, and the orgasm of the tastes. We picked Carlo Menta in the rush of Trastevere, Tastevere with scent of countryside breeze, and Luzzi with its own theatre performances.

Imagine a traditional Roman restuarant. This is it.

Before a massive night out in Trastevere, everybody wishes a delicious aperitif or dinner somewhere near by. In fact, the variety is giant, but it’s better to stay careful, because choosing a “tourist friendly” place is like choosing to donate very generously. Except for Carlo Menta, which offers you an extremely fair deal, considering its location and the amount of people who are willing to eating there. Maybe this is the keyword. The management is very smart, and they have discovered that low prices cause huge interest. This restaurant has a spacious outdoor part and two floors filled with tables to serve the hungry ones. The design is absolutely traditional, it could have been the scenery even hundred years ago. The service is acceptable, but nothing which would make your day or impress you for a life. Although this statement isn’t true for the dishes. Whatever you pick from the menu, it can’t be a wrong choice. You will find all the Italian specialities and even more. Our recommandation is to give a try to the penne with gorgonzola, it’s like a dream which comes true on your tongue. Though the Carbonara is a serious competitor, since it’s one of the bests near and far. Not to mention any kind of seafood, which is also excellent. To pet your stomach from starter to dessert usually doesn’t cost more than ten euros. Buon appetito!

There is a tiny hidden place at the other corner of Trastevere, which is the shelter of gastronomy addicts. Spot the label of Tastevere km0 and don’t forget to stop. There only few tables and chairs, but you will never feel sqeezed by the crowd. Not because all the people avoid this little heaven, but they insist consequently to the theory that “the quantity shouldn’t be at the expense of quality”. They want to leave the space and time for their guest to enjoy, what they offer. It means, if you aren’t lucky, you will need to come back later. After you got in, someone will give you advices, which wine you should taste. Every wine, which is sold here is from the region. In the meantime somebody else will prepare your plate. One plate is so rich that generally it’s enough for two. In few minutes the perfect composition of tastes will be served. There are eight slizes of freshly baked panini with some kind of magic topping, like broccoli cream with flowers or carbage and ginger cream. For sure you will find cheeses from the farms of Lazio, a more mature and a newer one with the famous chili jam, honey, unique Italian prosciutto and sausages. As a dessert ask for the tricky biscuits, which you have to dip in red wine or the magic combination of nutella and ricotta. Probably you will notice the unusual enthusiasm of the waiters like they would talk about their children, when they introduce your food. It isn’t accidental, because they are also working on the farms to prepare you this priceless bomb of joys.

Let’s zoom out from Trastevere and aim another touristy area. Surprisingly the other most local favourite is in the middle of the forest of selfie sticks, at the Colosseum. Luzzi is located here, the trattoria, where a long queue wriggles all the time, especially around 1pm and 9pm. This place has a magical atmosphere: it’s very overcrowded, so you can’t deny to get in touch with the guests at the neighbor table, which leads to awesome conversations and unstoppable laughters. The waiters and waitresses are always in a hurry, but they can’t resist comment something funny or present a little private performance to make your dinner unforgettable. Luzzi is like Babel, you will find many nations, cultures, languages between the visitors and in the service as well. Eating here is like attending an international meet up. Besides the atmosphere, we shouldn’t forget about the best Pizza Quattroformaggi of Rome, or about the magical Tiramisú, which is always served with as much spoons as you are at the table. The famous house wine and the limoncello – which will be probably offered as a gratis if you were a partner in crime in the joking  – will take care of your high mood as well.
