St. Francis Xavier del Caravita: An International Catholic Community
Via Caravita 7 (Off Via del Corso) www.caravita.org
Caravita is an international Catholic community that celebrates the Eucharist in English. The community especially welcomes English-speaking tourists and pilgrims with a special welcome for those who might have left the Church or stand on the fringe for whatever reason. Sunday Mass is usually followed by a congenial glass of Prosecco and socializing. The church, built between 1618 and 1633 and completely rebuilt between 1670 and 1677 by Giovanni Antonio de Rossi, is filled with art — the MaterPietatis, a fresco attributed to Baldassare Peruzzi; 17th-century frescoes in the vault of the atrium executed by various artists on a design by Lazaro Baldi. Mozart performed at Caravita as a teenager in 1770, captivating the royal court of Rome.
